It’s that time of year again and across the USA March Madness is erupting on basketball courts, sports bars, living room couches and just about anywhere else you can plug in a television. Heading into its 69th year, the NCAA Final Four has seen its share of memorable moments. Never a disappointment the wealth of glorious victories, incredible upsets and nail-biting finales have ensured this annual tournament as one of America’s most beloved. To celebrate and prepare for the 2008 NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, we present the top ten bench-clearing buzzer-beaters in March Madness history. 

10. Mike Miller: Florida vs. Butler – 2000

Number 10 on the NCAA Top Buzzer Beaters list goes to Mike Miller, then with the Florida Gators. With mere seconds remaining in what had been a very close game, Miller hit a runner in the lane as time expired. Guaranteeing the Gators win, Miller sank one right as the buzzer sounded and lifted the Gators over Butler, 69-68, in overtime. The first-round win sparked Florida to a 2000 NCAA Championship game appearance where they eventually lost to Michigan State. This was the beginning of Miller’s evolution into a top NBA player. Miller, currently with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, has gained the reputation as one of the best in the league for his ability to hit the clutch three-pointer. He was selected 5th overall in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and nabbed himself the 2001 Schick Rookie of the Year Award. Still going strong Miller earned himself the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award for the 2006 NBA season.

9. Drew Nicholas: Maryland vs. UNCW – 2003

UNCW was close to the win until Nicholas, like a man possessed, kept Maryland’s title-defense dreams alive when he took an inbound pass spanning the entire length of the court. Drew then weaved his way through multiple defenders before swishing a running, fade-away three-pointer at the buzzer with 2 defenders still draped all over him. The miracle basket gave the sixth-seeded Terrapins a 75-73 first-round win over No.11 UNC Wilmington. Following the huge win, Nicholas was selected in the 2003 USBL Draft by the Texas Rim Rockers. Nicholas most recently played guard for Efes Pilsen SK in Turkey. He was released by the team for following security warnings from the American Embassy and refusing to travel to Serbia for a Euroleague Top 16 game in Belgrade.

8. Danny Ainge: BYU vs. Notre Dame – 1981

It’s difficult to pick the most memorable moment from Danny Ainge’s long and amazing sports career, but this game is definitely in the running. Ainge went the entire length of the court and lofted in an unlikely finger roll at the buzzer to upset No. 2 Notre Dame and shock the packed house. After playing for the Blue Jays in the MLB, Ainge ended up drafted by the Boston Celtics who bought him out of his Blue Jays contract. With the Celtics, he quickly gained a reputation of angering his opponents with his brash style. After winning the NBA title in 1984 and 1986, he went on to play with the Kings, Trail Blazers, and Suns. During this period he twice lost to the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals, once with Portland and the year following with the Phoenix Suns. He is currently GM for the Boston Celtics.

7. Tate George: UConn vs. Clemson – 1990

Clemson practically had the champagne bottles already popping after they scored a 3-pointer with just 1.6 seconds left in the game. That was until Tate George brough a harsh end to their premature party. George caught a full-court pass, landed, turned and then drilled a fall-away jumper to send the UConn Huskies to a 71-70 win over Clemson in the East Regional semi-finals. Clemson was left stunned and UConn fans went absolutely out of their minds. Tate George was drafted 22nd overall in 1990 by the New Jersey Nets. He played 4 years in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers.

6. Richard Hamilton: UConn vs. Washington – 1998

Shortly after Washington finally managed to gain the lead, Richard Hamilton sank a desperate wild basket and gave UConn the win in a dramatic fashion. The Huskies missed three put-back attempts – the ball bounced out to Hamilton who missed his first attempt, then with his second he tripped backwards and fell while sinking a jaw-dropping 15-footer which cemented the win. Now nicknamed ‘Rip,’ and playing with the Detroit Pistons, Richard was the 1999 NBA Lottery pick of the Washington Wizards. He won the 2004 NBA Championship with the Pistons and was the team’s leading scorer.

5. Tyus Edney: UCLA vs. Missouri – 1995

UCLA was trailing by 1 with just 4.8 seconds left on the clock. Edney took an inbound pass, sped coast-to-coast and dribbled behind his back before tossing up a layup off the glass to beat the Tigers at the buzzer, giving the Bruins a 75-74 win over Missouri in a second-rounder. Later in the tournament against UConn, Edney had another full court run and drained a 25-foot 3-pointer en route to a 102-96 victory which led UCLA to win the title. Drafted in 1995 in the second round by the Sacramento Kings, he has bounced around the NBA and European professional leagues ever since.

4. Bryce Drew: Valparaiso vs. Ole Miss- 1998

Straight out of a Hollywood sports flick, Valparaiso’s head Coach, Homer Drew, watched in agony as his own son Bryce missed a potential game-winning basket with just 4.5 seconds to remaining. After a foul, Ole Miss ends up missing 2 free-throw attempts. With just a couple seconds left on the clock Valpo ran the hook-and-ladder and executed the last-second play to precision as Bryce drilled a three-pointer at the horn for a 70-69 first-round victory. Drew, arguably the best player in Valpo school history, was a first Round pick for the Houston Rockets in 1998. The first ever first round pick from Valparaiso, Bryce played 6 years in the NBA and 1 in Europe before returning to his Alma mater to serve as his father’s assistant coach.

3. Lorenzo Charles: N.C. State vs. Houston – 1983

Tied 52-52 against much favored Houston with time running down in the NCAA title game, point guard Derek Whittenburg heaved up a last ditch 30-footer from 3-point range. Lorenzo Charles caught the air ball and dunked it at the buzzer, ally-oop style, and pandemonium erupted on the court. A team that included NBA perennial All-Stars Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon and the rest of Phi Slama Jama had been defeated. Charles later played for the NBA Atlanta Hawks, a number of European teams and the USBL’s Raleigh Cougars.

2. Keith Smart: Indiana vs. Syracuse – 1987

With time running out Smart dribbled to the baseline and nailed a 12-footer that gave the Hoosiers a 74-73 win over the Syracuse Orangemen. Smart, who scored 12 of his team’s final 15 points that game, never made much of an impact in the NBA where he played 2 games for the Spurs. He spent the rest of his career in the CBA for 6 seasons and also had stops in the World Basketball League and the Philippines. He is currently an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.

1. Christian Laettner: Duke vs. Kentucky – 1992

Who can forget this gem of a Final Four moment? With just 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime Duke trailed Kentucky 103-102. Grant Hill threw a beautiful pass the length of the court to Christian Laettner who dribbled once, turned, and hit a jumper as time expired for the 104-103 win. It was the end of a heart-breaking game for Rick Pitino’s Wildcats who had managed to come back from a double-digit deficit only to watch their dreams crash and burn due to one miracle shot. Laettner is considered one of the greatest college players of all time, largely due to his outstanding play in 4 consecutive Final Fours. He went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA beginning with the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 3rd pick in the 1992 draft.

Hopefully this list of the Top 10 supremely amazing game endings in the history of the NCAA Final Four has left you quivering in anticipation for this year’s tournament and already scrambling for NCAA tickets to next year’s big show. Regardless of what happens in the future the incredible legacy of players like Tate George, Mike Miller, Danny Ainge, Richard Hamilton, Christian Laettner and other NCAA miracle makers will remain in the March Madness history books for all time.

The Lincoln trail is journey through the back doors of time that will reveal the life history of America’s most celebrated hero, Abraham Lincoln; the man who steered America through the civil war. Driving the Lincoln trail through Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois you will find the background of the great President. Each of the three stops reveals the life and history of the legendary figure. The first stop of the trail is the National Historic Site, a neo-classic Memorial Building in Hodgenville, Kentucky that preserves the symbolic birth cabin, reportedly the one where Lincoln was born. The Boyhood home unit at the Knob Creek Farm will give you a better sense of Lincoln’s formative years where he resided for five years. The reconstructed log cabin here is a true replica of the original, built on the original site in 1931, using logs from Austin Gollaher’s home (Lincoln’s schoolmate). Some furnishings in this house are period antiques, donated by the descendants of the native settlers.

As you cross the Ohio River, taking a 135-mile drive to the Lincoln City in Indiana, you will reach the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. The Lincoln family lived there in a pioneer community from 1816 to1830 and farmed the land for fourteen years. Abraham Lincoln spent much of his childhood on this farm and practiced law at the nearby Spencer Country Courthouse. You will come across a living history farm (open from late April to October) that re-creates the early nineteenth century farm life. Here you can walk a trail to the gravesite of Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The Visitor Center at the Boyhood Memorial features two Memorial halls showcasing a number of exhibits and a 15-minute orientation film entitled Forging Greatness – Lincoln in Indiana. Located in Lincoln State Park on Highway 162 in Lincoln City, is the Lincoln Amphitheater where you can enjoy the “Young Abe Lincoln”, musical outdoor drama while you experience the same beauty that surrounded Abraham Lincoln as he grew to manhood in Southern Indiana.

The next leg of the drive is about 250 miles, up to Springfield, Illinois where the young Lincoln began to set his mark as a great politician and people’s hero. The center of attraction here is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, the premier repository for artifacts relating to the life of Abraham Lincoln. The collection includes, among other artifacts, an original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th amendment outlawing slavery, the handwritten copy Gettysburg Address, and Lincoln’s presidential briefcase, all of which had been stored in a vault for more than 100 years. While in Illinois, you can also visit the Lincoln home at 426 S. 7th St., and a four-block historic area around it, as well as his old law office and the stately Lincoln’s Tomb where he was buried after his assassination in 1865. From here, a 20-mile side trip northwest on Route 97 takes you to the restored village of New Salem, where young Abe boarded the Rutledge Tavern and apparently fell in Love with Ann Rutledge, the young daughter of the Tavern’s owner. Ann died at an early age and the two never met again.

The Sun Belt Conference is wrapping up its regular season schedule right about now, so there are only a few more opportunities for the teams of this league to either impress the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee or to get prepared to take the Sun Belt Championship – and thus earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Clearly there are a couple of teams which have separated themselves from the rest of the pack within the conference at this point, so let’s take a moment to analyze these teams and project what their chances are of getting to the next level. North Texas – The clear favorite from the Sun Belt’s Western Division, North Texas is a mean, green, free throw shooting team. North Texas is 21-8 overall and 13-5 in the Sun Belt Conference, as of March 3, 2010. This team got very hot near the end of the season. In fact, they’re currently on an eight-game winning streak, which means they haven’t lost a contest in over a month. One thing that you have to worry about with the North Texas Mean Green is that they haven’t faced much in the way of stiff competition from outside their conference. If they can get into the NCAA Tournament they’ll be a real wild card.

Troy – The Trojans from Troy are atop the Eastern Division of the Sun Belt Conference with a record of 18-11 overall and 13-5 in the league. While they have a good shot at winning the conference title and getting the automatic bid from the Sun Belt, they’re really not shoe-ins for an at-large bid to the Tourney. Still, this team is hot right now, bringing with them a five-game winning streak into the postseason. One of this team’s biggest wins came against Auburn in the beginning of December. Can they replicate that David-like, giant-slaying quality about them in the first round of the NCAA Tournament—assuming they make it there?

Other Hopefuls – Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky both have the goods to land themselves in the NCAA Tournament, but they’re both long shots, dark horses who might end up in the NIT or some other end-of-season college basketball tournament. Western Kentucky is no stranger to the Dance, and once there they seem to always put on a show and pull off an upset.

The Sun Belt Conference has been putting on a show all season long, and this end of the basketball season is going to be even better.  So why not head out to your local arena and catch a game or two at the tail end of the year? Or, if you can get to an NCAA Tournament game, you might want to check out some real March Madness. Root for the Sun Belt Conference team to go far in the tourney, no matter which team or teams make it into the NCAA Tournament.

* It was LEGAL TO PAY TAXES WITH HEMP in America from 1631 until the early 1800s; L.A. Times, Aug. 12, 1981.

* REFUSING TO GROW HEMP in America during the 17th and 18th Centuries WAS AGAINST THE LAW! You could be jailed in Virginia for refusing to grow hemp from 1763 to 1769; Hemp in Colonial Virginia, G. M. Herdon.

* George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers GREW HEMP; Washington and Jefferson Diaries. Jefferson smuggled hemp seeds from China to France then to America.

* Benjamin Franklin owned one of the first paper mills in America and it processed hemp. Also, the War of 1812 was fought over hemp. Napoleon wanted to cut off Moscow’s export to England; Emperor Wears No Clothes, Jack Herer.

* For thousands of years, 90% of all ships’ sails and rope were made from hemp. The word ‘canvas’ is Dutch for hemp; Webster’s New World Dictionary.

* 80% of all textiles, fabrics, clothes, linen, drapes, bed sheets, etc. were made from hemp until the 1820s with the introduction of the cotton gin.

* The first Bibles, maps, charts, Betsy Ross’s flag, the first drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were made from hemp; U.S. Government Archives.

* The first crop grown in many states was hemp. 1850 was a peak year for Kentucky producing 40,000 tons. Hemp was the largest cash crop until the 20th Century; State Archives.

* Oldest known records of hemp farming go back 5000 years in China, although hemp industrialization probably goes back to ancient Egypt.

* Rembrandts, Gainsborough’s, Van Gogh’s as well as most early canvas paintings were principally painted on hemp linen.

* Henry Ford’s first Model-T was built to run on hemp gasoline and the CAR ITSELF WAS CONTRUCTED FROM HEMP! On his large estate, Ford was photographed among his hemp fields. .

* Hemp called ‘Billion Dollar Crop.’ It was the first time a cash crop had a business potential to exceed a billion dollars; Popular Mechanics, Feb., 1938.

* Mechanical Engineering Magazine (Feb. 1938) published an article entitled ‘The Most Profitable and Desirable Crop that Can be Grown.’ It stated that if hemp was cultivated using 20th Century technology, it would be the single largest agricultural crop in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

The following information comes directly from the United States Department of Agriculture’s 1942 14-minute film encouraging and instructing ‘patriotic American farmers’ to grow 350,000 acres of hemp each year for the war effort:

‘…(When) Grecian temples were new, hemp was already old in the service of mankind. For thousands of years, even then, this plant had been grown for cordage and cloth in China and elsewhere in the East. For centuries prior to about 1850, all the ships that sailed the western seas were rigged with hempen rope and sails. For the sailor, no less than the hangman, hemp was indispensable…

…Now with Philippine and East Indian sources of hemp in the hands of the Japanese…American hemp must meet the needs of our Army and Navy as well as of our industries…

…the Navy’s rapidly dwindling reserves. When that is gone, American hemp will go on duty again; hemp for mooring ships; hemp for tow lines; hemp for tackle and gear; hemp for countless naval uses both on ship and shore. Just as in the days when Old Ironsides sailed the seas victorious with her hempen shrouds and hempen sails. Hemp for victory!’

Certified proof from the Library of Congress; found by the research of Jack Herer, refuting claims of other government agencies that the 1942 U.S.D.A. film ‘Hemp for Victory’ did not exist.

From Popular Mechanics, Feb. 1938:
‘It has a short growing season…It can be grown in any state…The long roots penetrate and break the soil to leave it in perfect condition for the next year’s crop. The dense shock of leaves, 8 to 12 feet above the ground, chokes out weeds.

…hemp, this new crop can add immeasurably to American agriculture and industry.’

In the 1930s, innovations in farm machinery would have caused an industrial revolution when applied to hemp. This single resource could have created millions of new jobs generating thousands of quality products. Hemp, if not made illegal, would have brought America out of the Great Depression.

A media blitz of “yellow journalism” raged in the late 1920s and 1930s.  Hearst’s newspapers ran stories emphasizing the horrors of marihuana. The menace of marihuana made headlines.  Readers learned that it was responsible for everything from car accidents to loose morality.

Films like ‘Reefer Madness’ (1936), ‘Marihuana: Assassin of Youth’ (1935) and ‘Marihuana: The Devil’s Weed’ (1936) were propaganda designed by these industrialists to create an enemy. Their purpose was to gain public support so that anti-marihuana laws could be passed.

If the news was in print or on the radio, they believed it had to be true. They told their children and their children grew up to be the parents of the baby-boomers.

On April 14, 1937, the Prohibitive Marihuana Tax Law or the bill that outlawed hemp was directly brought to the House Ways and Means Committee. This committee is the only one that can introduce a bill to the House floor without it being debated by other committees. The Chairman of the Ways and Means, Robert Doughton, was a Dupont supporter. He insured that the bill would pass Congress.

Hemp has a higher quality fiber than wood fiber. Far fewer caustic chemicals are required to make paper from hemp than from trees. Hemp paper does not turn yellow and is very durable. The plant grows quickly to maturity in a season where trees take a lifetime.

ALL PLASTIC PRODUCTS SHOULD BE MADE FROM HEMP SEED OIL.  Hempen plastics are biodegradable! Over time, they would break down and not harm the environment. Oil-based plastics, the ones we are very familiar with, help ruin nature; they do not break down and will do great harm in the future. The process to produce the vast array of natural (hempen) plastics will not ruin the rivers as Dupont and other petrochemical companies have done. Ecology does not fit in with the plans of the Oil Industry and the political machine. Hemp products are safe and natural.

MEDICINES SHOULD BE MADE FROM HEMP. We should go back to the days when the AMA supported hemp cures. ‘Medical Marijuana’ is given out legally to only a handful of people while the rest of us are forced into a system that relies on chemicals. Hemp is only healthy for the human body.

WORLD HUNGER COULD END. A large variety of food products can be generated from hemp. The seeds contain one of the highest sources of protein in nature. Superior hemp products are not allowed to advertise on fascist television. Kentucky, once the top hemp producing state, made it ILLEGAL TO WEAR hemp clothing! Once we have contracted with the owner of the barn, the real fun begins.  We deconstruct each barn in a systematic manner in order to save each usable board.  This is a labor of love, but well worth the effort when you find lumber cut from trees that took life some three hundred years ago, which leads me to my next point.  Reclaimed lumber has characteristics by default that cannot be replicated by modern day lumber.  Most of the reclaimed wood we recycle came from virgin forests that were slow growing thus leading to a more dense wood with very minimal annual growth.

Not only is reclaimed wood better because you are recycling an American natural resource, it is a great source of revenue for the local economy that has a stand of these antique lumber sources.  At Many Moons, we take great pride in recycling these barns using rural labor forces, and local mills.  We are happy that our products were made in America some 100 years ago by our ancestors, and now we are recycling their hard work into beautiful reclaimed flooring and reclaimed furniture, with some of our own hard work.
